Raising the bar

All too often our communication, at least in English, is peppered with swear words. We take it for granted that sometime, somewhere, almost anyone could drop the ‘F bomb’. I’m not innocent in the use of colorful language but I recognize that it’s completely possible to communicate without cussing. To that end, I decided to try this quick check of my twitter posts. This is what I found.

How much do you cuss on Twitter?

Created by Oatmeal

I recall taking an English class where the text was devoted to the study of words identified as cuss words. I can’t remember the title or anything other than debates on everything from socialism to personal ownership of firearms. Not all that related to the topic but as this is one that can also be debated until the moon is blue, let’s see what you think.

Why do we do this?

bench among treesand take a last, flying look
at the last lonely eagle
he’s soaring the length of the land
shed a tear for the fate
of the last lonely eagle
for you know that he never will land

if you go down to the gas-powered flatland
where most of the people just think
that they’re free
remember the peace that you had
on the mountain
come back to the love that you had here with me

for you know that he never will land . . .

Perhaps leading a blog post with lyrics from an old New Riders of the Purple Sage / Grateful Dead song makes little sense however the lament reflected in these lyrics is how I feel about our nation of confused and out of control people.

I probably shouldn’t read the news, everyone suggests to me this isn’t a good way to spend my time. Somehow I’m supposed to feel better and think happy thoughts if I ignore the various things going on around me. After all, I’m unable to change these events or alter the thought process that goes into raping, killing, beating, cannibalizing, bombing, shooting, lying, harassing or overall just plain acting bat guano nuts.

I know I’m not the last lonely eagle but it seems appropriate to hang this monicker on a significant portion of the population, which like me must think, how did I end up in this insane asylum?

We hear those suggesting they are saving the planet through some ego-centric, feel good, eco-conforming, mumbo-jumbo, and I can understand their passion. After all with the world population so large and the maniacal behavior of some of its inhabitants why not attempt to suggest there is a way through action to place this planet in a perpetual safety blanket? We raise armies against each other or form gangs often justified based on the need for protection; why not form groups that decide to do random acts of kindness?

If there is some giant intelligence that created this plant peering through the atmosphere and analyzing our behavior, I should think one of two ideas would come to mind, destroy it before it eventually learns to transport its poison to other places in the galaxy or sit back and watch to see if their small brains can comprehend how glorious things could be if we learned cooperation and positive participation.

Just a thought. Meanwhile ignore this post and most especially the news, except that which is broadcast as entertainment or sports. Maybe the insanity will all go away if we collectively don’t look at it or do anything to stop it.

Getting it Right

man growing record length ear hairRecently I achieved another personal milestone when I became a Sexagenarian. This may be a lot simpler to some but for me the time it took was about the same as others. I didn’t have to study for it or pass any test other than not expiring.

During this period I learned to read and write only one language and perhaps that wasn’t to any great level. I attempted to learn another language foreign to my own but at the time, hardly no one was using it around me and now it’s the second language of the US. I did learn 6 different computer programming languages, 8 different operating systems and a whole lot of long forgotten applications tied to these operating systems.

I left home after volunteering for the Marine Corps and managed to convince a few people I was trainable and was allowed to mangle a stray computer bit or two while on 4 years of active duty. Each of those years resulted in a promotion which proves the axiom, you can fool some of the people some of the time. I did however rather unsuccessfully marry twice and father 4 children. Each of those wives were able to identify my severe character flaws and to a lesser extent, so have my children.

All of this leads me to summarizing a portion of what I’ve learned over these few decades; every person I’ve met or read about wants to be right. Some of these people assert with great conviction they are right to the exclusion of all others not in tacit agreement. No matter if their ideas are diametrically opposed to that of others, they are correct in their view of the world and how it should be managed.

Sometimes I’ve benefited by the years of wisdom some have accumulated where 3 people have 7 different opinions. I’ve found this strategy is very successful for a politician because they can be right among many.

3 soaring diversNow after many years of learning strategies that don’t work and very few that do, I thought I should take a moment and share this wisdom of the ages with you.

Take this short quiz, then add up the number of times you have chosen answer A or B.

1 – Parents today know how to raise their kids better because:
A – You were wrong all those years in raising them & therefore your bad example has shown them the right way.
B – There are so many good books and courses available on the topic.

2 – You work out how to be married when:
A – Learn the woman is always right.
B – Can cook better than she can.

3 – You find satisfaction and meaning to life when:
A – Let things go and be flexible
B – Choose to follow a specific a theological theory or system

4 – When dealing with a bad manager or awful client you should:
A – flame them in every social media outlet you know.
B – take the high road and don’t retaliate, remove yourself when & where possible.

5 – When dealing with a difficult coworker you should:
A – confront them and insult them until they are a mass of quivering jelly.
B – take them out to lunch and kindly seek to resolve any conflict or difficulty.

6 – To understand how the federal government should handle the economy:
A – attend 6 or more years at a university and read & write papers on a variety of competing economic theories.
B – learn how to earn a living and balance your checkbook.

Here’s how to score your results from this brief test.

6 A’s – you are brilliant and need to start your own radio or TV talk show.

5 A’s – not bad there’s still a chance for you somewhere in the celebrity or entertainment field.

4 A’s – this is an awkward stage whereby you may require several hours of Oprah or Bill Maher remedial training.

3 A’s – at this point you need to at least earn a BA and attend several charity dinners to save an animal or plant of your choosing.

2 A’s – you need to go back to school and either become an actor or politician.

0 or 1 A – join millions of others who are fed up with current populist society and have decided to think for themselves.

New ideas coming our way

I’m continually amazed at the progress we have made as a civilization but there are signs we have a long way to go. First let’s talk about technology changes.

The major change we see on our computers are the continuous move toward graphical / pictorial representation. Windows 8 exemplifies how a significant contributor to software controlling our computers removes us as much as possible from choices though text. It is a screen design which mimics more of the IPhone & Android market. Clearly Microsoft has witnessed the consumer  expansion in the smartphone and graphical pad platform. I’m not all together sure this in some ways contributes to the dumbing down of a society whereby rendering us less capable of communication via spoken word.

The Oculus Rift is the latest display technology which demonstrates key features in a practical structure for head mounted virtual displays. First it provides a wide field of view, 110 degrees horizontal. Second it creates 3D virtual reality with lightweight stereoscopic visual images.  Third it has caused a buzz in the gaming community which provided required funding to move a product through the necessary R&D into a sale-able package. I can see this product having broad use in bringing technical and surgical information to the end-user.

Of course we’ve seen the supposedly ground breaking head mounted display technology before and not much has come from it, so a lot has to do with perceived value at a time when the economy isn’t doing very well. Maybe gamers will provide the extra incentive to bring the product to market.

Mars exploration begins with a video of the Rover descent on to the planet. An exciting time for NASA to show what it can do even with a restrictive budget to enhance our understanding of other planets.

What happens if you propose software that supposedly revolutionizes national and international stock trades but falls flat on its face? Well, you have what is now called a flash crash. It happened recently on Wall Street. Read the details here.
